November Board Meeting Recap

Board Meeting Update: Moving Forward Together
This month's board meeting featured a mix of routine business, policy updates, and a few exciting opportunities that will directly impact our students and staff.
As is often the case, the board approved several consent agenda items that keep the district running smoothly. These included financial reports, fundraiser requests, facility use agreements, partnerships with outside organizations, and agreements that support student services and staff development. While these items may not always grab headlines, they represent the day-to-day work that helps keep Cleveland Public Schools operating efficiently.
One significant discussion centered on updates to policies regarding the reporting and investigation of sexual abuse, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, abuse, neglect, exploitation, and trafficking. Working alongside legal counsel, the district continues to strengthen procedures that ensure compliance with Title IX requirements while providing increased protections for victims and ensuring allegations are addressed thoroughly and appropriately. Over the last several years, we have worked intentionally to build stronger safeguards and clearer processes, and these updates continue that effort.
The board also considered a bid for concrete work at the agricultural facility's "Pig Palace." Rather than proceeding with the single quote received, the board chose to seek additional bids to ensure responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars before moving forward.
Two exciting student-focused initiatives were approved. First, the district entered into an agreement with Perry Weather, which will provide a weather station for our campus. The system will give us real-time weather data, lightning detection, wet bulb temperature readings, and direct access to weather professionals when questions arise. This will improve decision-making for athletics, outdoor activities, and student safety.
Second, the board approved an agreement with Oklahoma State University to provide telehealth services for students. This partnership will allow qualifying students to virtually meet with a healthcare provider while remaining at school, with parental participation available. In some cases, students may be able to return to class the same day or receive needed medical care without waiting for a next-day doctor's appointment. This is another step toward reducing barriers that keep students from learning.
The board also approved several larger purchases and encumbrances, including a laser engraver funded through a Carl Perkins grant, a new air conditioning unit, turf improvements at the Intermediate School, and new band and choir chairs. These investments support both student learning and facility improvement efforts across the district.
Time was spent during the board meeting reminding the community of our Veteran’s Day Parade happening next week. Don’t forget to bring a Veteran and join the parade! Veterans Day RSVP and Information
Celebrating Progress
We shared some encouraging news regarding student outcomes. Our college remediation rates continue to decline while concurrent enrollment opportunities and participation continue to grow. These are strong indicators that more students are leaving Cleveland High School prepared for success after graduation.
Perhaps the most exciting news came from the state regarding graduation rates. While Oklahoma's overall four-year graduation rate declined from 82% to 77%, Cleveland High School was recognized as one of only eleven high schools in the state to improve its graduation rate by at least ten percentage points.
That doesn't happen by accident.
It happens because of relationships. It happens because teachers and support staff know students by name. It happens because classrooms connect learning to the real world. It happens because mentorship matters, quality instruction matters, and every staff member contributes to creating an environment where students can succeed.
The best days for Cleveland Public Schools are still ahead. Go Tigers! 🐅
