Thank you to those who were able to attend our recent parent meeting regarding 6th grade athletics. For those who could not attend—and as a follow‑up for all families—we want to clearly communicate why we believe this shift is the best path forward for our students and what steps come next.
Why This Change Matters
Our decision to separate 6th grade athletics from 7th grade was made with one goal in mind: long-term student success and enjoyment. Over time, we have seen a steady decline in participation as students move from 6th into 7th and 8th grade. Many students were previously placed into highly competitive environments before they were fully ready, which often led to frustration, loss of confidence, and ultimately, students stepping away from athletics altogether.
By creating a true 6th grade transition year, we are providing:
- A more developmentally appropriate experience
- A focus on skill-building and confidence
- Opportunities to try multiple sports
- A chance to grow physically, socially, and emotionally
We firmly believe this approach will result in more students staying involved, improving, and enjoying athletics long-term.
6th Grade vs. 7th Grade Opportunities
While there will be an opportunity for some students to compete at the 7th grade level, it is important for families to understand:
- This opportunity will apply to a very small number of students
- Most 6th graders who request consideration will remain in 6th grade athletics
- Placement will only occur after a structured evaluation period by coaches
- Decisions will always be based on what is best for the student’s development
Our priority is not to move students up early, but to ensure they are placed where they will grow, succeed, and continue participating.
Summer Pride: A Key Opportunity
We strongly encourage all incoming 6th graders planning to participate in athletics to attend Summer Pride. Summer Pride is critical because it helps students:
- Get faster, stronger, and more confident
- Learn expectations and build relationships with coaches
- Prepare for the upcoming school year
Additionally, Summer Pride will serve as part of the evaluation process for those students who wish to be considered for 7th grade participation. This is the best opportunity for coaches to see student effort, growth, and readiness.
Summer Pride Details: Begins: June 1st – Time: 8:45 AM, Behind the Event Center. Requirement: Current physical on file
Survey Reminder
At this time, only 25 families have completed the interest survey.
If your student is interested in athletics—it is very important that you complete the survey.

Cross Country Update
Due to the structure of practices and competitions, 6th grade athletes will still have the opportunity to compete alongside middle school cross country teams, even while remaining part of the 6th grade athletics model. This allows students to gain valuable competition experience while still benefiting from the 6th grade developmental focus.
Physicals Reminder
All students must have a current athletic physical prior to participation. Because of scheduling, current 5th graders will need to obtain their physical through their primary care provider over the summer.
