At Cleveland Middle School, students aren’t just learning about science, technology, engineering, and math—they’re building, coding, and designing their way into the future! The STEM electives, available in all grade levels, provide hands-on experiences that challenge students to think critically, problem-solve, and create.
Hands-On Learning in Action
From the moment they step into the classroom, students engage in real-world applications of STEM concepts. They work with measurements and scales by constructing towers, bridges, catapults, and house designs—applying math and physics principles in exciting, tangible ways. These projects not only reinforce engineering fundamentals but also encourage creativity and teamwork.
Coding and Robotics play a crucial role in the curriculum. Students first learn to code and then put their knowledge into action by operating drones and robotics, seeing firsthand how programming translates to real-world movement and automation.
In addition, students design 3D objects in Tinkercad, creating prototypes and visualizing their ideas before bringing them to life. These skills are further enhanced through access to 3D design machines, a large-scale wind tunnel, and Glow Forge design machines, expanding their capabilities in digital fabrication and engineering.
Passion Beyond the Classroom
The excitement for STEM doesn’t stop when the bell rings. Students are so engaged in their projects that many choose to skip recess to work on their Sea Perch designs—underwater robotic vehicles built for competition. This level of dedication speaks volumes about the enthusiasm and drive these students have for engineering and problem-solving.
Preparing for the Future
Cleveland Middle School’s STEM program is more than just hands-on projects—it serves as a pipeline to the high school STEM and Engineering programs, where students can continue to refine their skills in advanced courses. Many of the concepts introduced in middle school lay the foundation for more complex engineering, robotics, and design projects at the next level.
