Take-Home Literacy Backpacks: A Summer Resource for Families
We’re thrilled to share that your child will be bringing home a Take-Home Literacy Backpack this Friday—part of our district’s new literacy initiative funded through the Oklahoma Comprehensive Literacy State Development (OCLSD) Grant. These backpacks are designed to keep kids learning all summer long with you by their side.
Each backpack includes engaging, grade-appropriate resources developed by Teacher Created Materials—a leader in high-quality educational tools. The materials are not just for students—they’re built for families to use together.
📦 What’s Inside the Backpack?
âś… The Kids Learn! Activity Book
This colorful, full-size workbook is packed with standards-based practice in reading, writing, and math. The first few pages are a guide just for parents—with quick tips, daily routines, and encouragement to help make learning part of your summer schedule.
✅ 3–5 High-Interest Books
Your child’s backpack includes a mix of engaging fiction and nonfiction books across science, social studies, and more. These are meant to be read for fun—and they’re a great springboard for family conversations.
âś… A Family Engagement Guide
This booklet is full of simple strategies and creative ideas for making literacy part of everyday life—whether you’re at the dinner table, on a walk, or driving to practice.
🏡 How Families Can Use the Backpack
The best part? You don’t have to plan lessons or become a teacher. Just a few intentional minutes each day can make a huge difference. Here are some ways to dive in:
📚 Create a Daily Reading Time
Even 15 minutes a day helps! Kids can read independently, to a sibling, or aloud to you. Ask questions like “What’s happening in the story?” or “Would you have done the same thing as the character?”
📝 Use the Workbook a Little at a Time
Try a page or two each day. Let your child explain their thinking, and celebrate effort and progress. The activities are short but powerful!
🎲 Make It Fun and Practical
- Write a silly story together using the vocabulary words in the workbook.
- Have your child write a menu for lunch or a list for errands.
- Take a book to the park or on a road trip.
👨‍👩‍👧 Encourage & Connect
You don’t need all the answers. Just being involved—reading together, asking questions, showing interest—makes you your child’s most important teacher.
We’re so excited to partner with you this summer!
Your support helps prevent learning loss, builds confidence, and keeps the joy of learning alive even when school is out. If you have questions or want more ideas, feel free to reach out—we’re here to help.
Let’s make this summer a season of stories, curiosity, and growth—together.
