Text Box: Several of our boys have already found this wonderful Sequoyah nominee.  Deuker explores the darkest side of sports (supplements and drugs) as he follows Mick Johnson’s struggle to get better and better.  He’s already a good football Text Box: player, but Mick puts enormous pressure on himself to achieve at the level his father did years before when he was chosen in an NFL draft.  Mick is a realistic, believable young man, and the author does not sugarcoat the effects of his behavior or the Text Box: impact on his future.

Text Box: Taking Action to Stop Bullying:
This kit contains a 5 minute video,  a curriculum module including student handouts, and transparencies, and an implementation guide.  The curriculum module uses the novel Wringer by Jerry Spinelli as the basis for literacy based lessons about bullying.  It could easily be implemented in a language arts or reading classroom.
Growing Into Healthy Sexuality for Grades 6-8:
The module serves as part of a comprehensive school health education curriculum by serving as a starting point for develText Box: oping a comprehensive approach to sexuality education within the context of comprehensive school health education.
Getting Active and Eating Well:  This curriculum plan contains several modules including:  Moving for Health, Healthy Eating Around the World, Influences on Food Choices, and Setting and Reaching Goals.  Each set of materials contains a teacher’s guide and reproducible handouts for students.
Aggressors, Victims, and Bystanders:  Thinking and Acting to Prevent Violence:  This module encourages young people to examine their roles as Text Box: aggressors, victims, and bystanders and helps students develop problem-solving skills and new ways of thinking about how they respond to conflict in each of these roles.  The module contains a curriculum guide, student handouts, and transparencies.  
Building Foundations:  Developing Skills for Life:  This kit comes with a 15 minutes video and contains many role-playing scenarios for developing life skills with middle schoolers.  Subjects include:  communication, decision making, and reaching goals.  If you need something for Homeroom...give this a try.
