As we continue exploring different options for next year’s calendar for Cleveland Schools, we want to update our community on where we are in the process. Our goal is to make a well-informed decision that considers the needs of our students, families, and staff.

After gathering input from 650 of you! [you can review the full results here], we’ve narrowed our focus to two calendar options. These calendar options are included in the image and are compared to a 6 year average of our traditional calendars. As you can see even in our “traditional” calendars we have always had plenty of abbreviated weeks.

• Calendar 1: A more traditional summer break length with fewer additional weekdays off during the school year.
• Calendar 2: A shorter summer break by about two weeks, but 10 more weekdays off throughout the school year. September, October, November, January, February, and March have Fridays off which is a biggest deviation from our historical norm.

We are reviewed the past 2 and a half years of attendance data to determine which day of the week to utilize in our 2nd calendar option. At that point the answer was clear – Mondays are the best attended day of the week, and it wasn’t close.

While many families may not be impacted by the additional weekday breaks in Calendar 2, we understand that some parents may face challenges with childcare on those days. We do not want to make this decision without hearing from any family that would be significantly burdened by the extra 8–10 weekdays off.
